Google Apps official resources


Syncing email to your iPad is simple, and was done during your initial iPad training. If you need to sync another device such as an iPhone, click here for instructions


Think Labels as folders. Google calls them labels becuase you can apply multiple labels to an email and your entire mailbox is searchable by labels. What this means is if you apply the label "PD" to an email, you can find that email by searching for the sender, subject, or label. In addition, if an email is important because it covers 2 topics, "PD" and "Certification" you can apply both labels to the message and you'll be able to find that message by searching either word.

Creating Labels

Within your mailbox you'll find labels listed along the left-hand navigation

Here is a close-up of some labels within an inbox:

To create a label look for the folder icon (highlighted), or the tag icon next to it. Either way you'll see a list of labels and the ability to "Create new"

Once you have created a filter you can Move & Archive messages out of your inbox into their respective Label "folders"
(remember, labels are like folders in that you can sort message, however, labels do more than folders in that you can apply multiple labels to a single message and that message will get categorized and become searchable by all labels)


A filter is a way to automate your mailbox. Do you get a lot of message from a user group or list-serve? Do you get messages you want to keep but don't want to clutter your inbox? Use a filter to let GMail organize, label & archive messages automatically.

From within a message you'll see a "More" menu with a "Filter messages like these" option

The Filter options allow you to customize how Google treats messages. I use filters to have regular messages, such as subscriptions, skip my inbox, essentially creating a secondary inbox for specific messages.

Here is an example of a Filter and Label working together. I receive regular messages from a Google Users Group. I created a filter so those messages skip my inbox and I created a Label so after they skip the inbox they go to their own labeled location. The below image is of my Google Users Group label box showing read and unread messages, essentially an inbox exclusively for emails originating from the Google Users Group. This way I have them categorized but they are not cluttering up my inbox.

Google Calendar

The calendar feature is Google Apps is a very easy to use, robust application. It syncs seamlessly with your iPad and you can easily invite colleagues to events, parent to conferences, and schedule classroom resources.

This overview shows a week view. Events are color coded based on personal preference & categorization

Creating an event is simple. You can customize as much or as little of our event as you would like.
Add a title, start and end times, invite guests, set reminders, color code based on type...
... one helpful feature of the Repeat option. If you have an ongoing event, you can set Google to automatically repeat the initial event so you don't have to manually schedule every instance of the same event.

The Calendar app on the iPad is synced to your Google account and functions the same way the desktop browser does for creating & managing events.
Any event created within a browser is automatically added to your iPad and vice versa
On your iPad click the + in the bottom right corner to create an event

Just like the browser-based Calendar, you can give the event a title, time, invite guests, repeat, etc...

You can add an event from any Calendar view. Once you are in the Add Event window your Start & End window will allow you to choose any date and any time for your event

When creating an event on your iPad you have all the features of the browser-based Calendar tool (with the exception of color coding)

Create Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings & Forms


You can also create Collections - essentially folders in which you can organize files and sub-folders. You can share entire Collections (if you share a Collection anything within that collection is automatically shared too)

Upload existing files or entire folders (Google supports MS Office as well as other word processing formats, but does not support Apple's iWork - Pages, Numbers, Keynote)

Share file or entire folders & choose how to share them, who can view them, and who can edit them

SIte is detailed and in depth, just as the Training Center link above, but covers a much wider scope of Google Apps than just the Education aspect.
